Glaucoma is a general term for several related eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, which is vital to moving information between the eye and brain. Glaucoma is generally associated with excess pressure within the eye, though this is not always the case. Individuals experiencing symptoms of glaucoma should immediately contact a medical professional.

It should be noted that open-angle glaucoma has little to no early symptoms. Individuals will likely notice small, patchy spots at the edges of their vision gradually grow in size. They can also expect to encounter central vision problems as open-angle glaucoma advances. Normal-tension glaucoma is similar in that it lacks early symptoms, but is marked by a progressive loss of peripheral vision.

Acute angle-closure glaucoma, on the other hand, has a number of early symptoms. The earliest signs of the condition include severe and recurrent headaches and eye pain. Eyes may also appear red, and it is not unusual for a person to start experiencing blurred vision or seeing halos around sources of light. Halos around lights may be indicative of pigmentary glaucoma, especially when paired with blurred vision that occurs after exercising.
